TT’S TECH TAKE 002
💻❤️ TT'S TECH TAKE 002
What if AI could give your healthcare provider something healthcare desperately needs more of? Time to actually look at you👀
Today's tech. Five human questions. One healthier future.
The Minneapolis VA has rolled out Ambient AI Scribe in its primary care clinics. With a Veteran's permission, it can help create clinical documentation that the clinician reviews for accuracy. The goal? Less documenting. More focus on the Veteran❤️But when AI is listening during a healthcare visit, we're also talking about privacy, consent, trust, and human connection.
Five questions worth asking👇🏽📋
1️⃣ DOES IT HELP PEOPLE?
Potentially, YES! If AI can safely reduce documentation burden, we could get something valuable back:
👀Eye contact.
👂🏽Listening.
❤️Human connection.
2️⃣ WHO COULD BE LEFT BEHIND?
Not everyone will feel the same about AI listening during an appointment.
That's why choice matters. At Minneapolis VA, clinicians ask permission before activating the AI Scribe, and Veterans can opt out without affecting their care.
3️⃣ IS IT FAIR AND TRANSPARENT?
It should be. Patients should understand what it does, how their information is protected, and who remains responsible. VA says it follows HIPAA and VA security standards. Minneapolis VA says audio is automatically deleted after 30 days. AI can assist. Humans remain accountable.
4️⃣ DOES IT SUPPORT THE PEOPLE DOING THE WORK?
If AI can safely reduce documentation burden, it isn't replacing the healthcare professional. It's giving some of their attention back to the patient🤝🏽
5️⃣ WOULD I WANT THIS USED FOR SOMEONE I LOVE?
If they understood it, chose it, and their healthcare professional remained responsible? Yes! Sometimes better healthcare technology isn't about adding another screen. Sometimes it's about helping the screen disappear❤️
💭 MY TAKE
This one hits closer to home. I've spent years in patient-facing healthcare, and today I work closer to the technology side. I'm also a Veteran who receives my own healthcare through the Minneapolis VA. So when I look at technology like this, I'm looking from more than one seat. I've seen how important human connection is behind the scenes. Not because AI is flashy. Because of what it could give back!
⌨️ Less typing.
👂🏽 More listening.
👀 More eye contact.
❤️ More connection.
Some of the best healthcare technology may not be what patients notice most. It may be the technology that helps the healthcare professional notice the patient more❤️
💭 YOUR TURN. WHAT'S YOUR TAKE?
Would you be comfortable with AI listening during your medical appointment if it meant your healthcare provider could spend more time focused on you? Drop your take below. I'm curious where you land 👇🏽
